JUNETEENTH AT THE FREEDOM LAB

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. Juneteenth 2023 will occur on Monday, June 19.*

This Saturday, June 17th, join us at the Freedom Lab for a full day of Juneteenth celebrations. There’s something for everyone including a 5k run and yoga, hurricane preparedness kits, free clinic grand opening and harvesting of the garden.

The MCA will have a booth starting at 12PM where we’ll be spinning our “Wheel of Climate” giving away items to get you prepared for Heat and Hurricane season.
